The Role of Vision

Having a school vision is much more than meeting a compliance. A school vision becomes the measure against which a school evaluates their effectiveness. A school vision becomes the guidelines for making decisions. A school vision provides direction, purpose and focus. In the process of developing and implementing a school curriculum, it is the vision that guides what will be the content of the curriculum.
The following diagram shows how curriculum is developed and implemented based on a school vision.

A suggested process:


  • Define your vision
    From the vision will come a number of strands such as Communcation, Thinking, Social skills etc
  • For each strand define your 'succes criteria' or 'graduate profile'.
  • Use your success criteria to establish curriculum content
  • Establish learning and teaching philosophies to clarify teaching strategies, processes and expected practices
  • Establish assessment content and processes based on success criteria
  • Report to appropriate stakeholders in terms of success criteria and vision
  • Review all aspects of the school in terms of the vision and our effectiveness in terms of delivering that vision

This will usually take 2 to 3 years to complete. It will be a process that digs deep into our basic beliefs around learning, teaching and life. In fact vision, curriculum, success criteria, curriculum, delivery, assessment, professional development, appointments, induction, appraisals and budgets should always be open to constant review. We should always be clarifying "What are we trying to achieve?" and "How well are we going in terms of achieving that?"
